Municipal Parks and Plazas
Managed By: Icon Here Park Patrol
Description:
Parks, plazas and greens maintained by municipal entities
Expanded Description:

Local culture is often reflected in local municipal parks, plazas and greens. It is where we commemorate significant people and events, where we display art, where we gather for games, recreation, and events.

To qualify this category, the park must be maintained by a local municipality -- city, town, village. State, provincial, and national parks and all types of private parks (nor for public use) should be entered in other categories.
Instructions for Posting a Municipal Parks and Plazas Waymark:

QUALIFICATIONS: Any park, plaza, town green, or other similar space maintained by a local municipality -- city, town, village. For the U.S. county parks are also acceptable. Also, private parks, or parks sponsored by civic organizations such as Rotary International, that are open for public use may also be included.

NAME: The name of the waymark should be the name of the park and the municipality, state and/or country, following this exact format:

City Park Name - My Town, State (or Country).

1. Coordinates obtained from your personal GPS readings.

These should be taken from an entrance to the park or area, or some other access point. You must state exactly where the coordinates are taken. If it is a large park, consider waymarking other entrances or significant elements with photos for the gallery.

2. At least TWO photographs -- a panoramic view of a portion of the park (this should be the default photo for the description page), and a close-up clearly showing a sign with the name of the park. If there is no such sign, please state such and this requirement is waived, of course. GPSr photo is NOT required. Night photos may be used to show lights or other features better seen at night, but daylight photos must be used to show the main features and sign of the park. Please do NOT make the close-up view of the sign the default photo!

NOTE: All photos must be original and placed in this category's gallery!

3. Narrative description -- Include as much information about your park -- its history, significance of its name, memorials, facilities, special events, etc. -- whatever is applicable. Focus on what is unique and reflects the local culture. You are encouraged to provide additional photos for the gallery, but this is not required.

4. Variables NOT ALL variables listed are required, only the basic information, so don't let this deter you. They are provided to give you an easy way to record important information that may or may not be relevant to your waymark. Do what you can.

SPECIAL NOTE: While the details outlined in our category description, and the requirements listed in the posting instructions, cover the MINIMUM elements and standards for all waymarks in this category, each waymark will also be evaluated by a volunteer reviewer for overall quality and appropriateness. If a reviewer deems that there are deficiencies in some aspect of the waymark, the waymark may be either declined or accepted with request for changes and/or additions in either content or format.

Each waymark will be evaluated on its own merits. We will endeavor to be reasonable and flexible while maintaining the quality standards for the category. If there is a disagreement, try to work it out with the evaluating officer, or appeal to the group leader, but we reserve the right to accept or decline a waymark based on our best judgement.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. All waymarks must have at least a short description in ENGLISH. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English. We have volunteer translators to help.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if there the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
One photo of the park that is a different view from the one on the page, and give the date and description your visit.

Add any additional information that you may have about this park. A GPSr photo is NOT required.

Municipal Parks and PlazasSugar Mill Ruins Park – New Smyrna Beach, Florida

in Municipal Parks and Plazas

At the corner of Mission and Old Mission Roads in New Smryna Beach, a narrow dirt road leads west under ancient live oaks to an archaeological site that was long mistaken for an early Spanish mission. But the coquina walls belong to the Cruger-dePeyster Sugar Mill, established in 1830 and abandoned in 1835 after a Seminole raid, and this park tells its story.
