description/mission statement:
The group will manage categories related to memorials and monuments honoring those who fought in World War I.
This conflict, at the time called "The Great War" or "The War to End All Wars" was fought from 1914 to 1918 and was truly the first "world war," involving countries all over the globe. Over three dozen countries from six continents had troops on the battlefields. Some 8.5 million men died in the war and over 21 million were wounded.
Following the conclusion of this horrific war, memorials and monuments were constructed around the world to honor those who fought and those who fell in battle.
This category seeks to waymark all World War I Memorials and Monuments, big and small, located throughout the world. We will focus initially on memorials erected by cities, counties, towns, villages and nations to honor native soldiers as a group. (A future category may involve memorials or monuments to specific individuals.)
