description/mission statement:
Identify and catalog the architectural styles of Mozarabic and Mudejar art. Mudejar and Mozarabic art are two artistic styles that emerged in the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. These styles not only reflect the rich cultural diversity of Spain but also reveal how Arab and Christian influences intertwined to shape the peninsula's artistic identity. Mozarabic art developed in the territories under Muslim rule, especially in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, between the 9th and 11th centuries. The characteristics of Mozarabic art are: Use of the basilica plan with three naves. Use of the horseshoe arch, a typical arch of Islamic architecture. Influence of Umayyad and Caliphate architecture from the south of the peninsula. Use of local materials such as stone and brick. Mudéjar art is defined as the artistic style developed in the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, especially in the area of Aragon, Castile and León, between the 12th and 17th centuries. The characteristics of Mudéjar art are: The use of brick, plaster, and carved wood as its main materials. Decoration with geometric, vegetal, and epigraphic motifs of Islamic inspiration. The use of overhead structures, such as star-shaped ribbed vaults. The influence of Almohad and Nasrid architecture from the south of the peninsula. In addition to incorporating decorative elements and construction techniques of Islamic origin, these were carried out in buildings of Romanesque, Gothic, or Renaissance styles. Influence outside Spain: PORTUGAL: In Portugal, Mudéjar architecture left its mark, especially in the Lisbon region and in cities like Évora, where examples of Mudéjar influences can be found in churches and civil buildings. FRANCE: Mozarabic art in France is scarcer and manifests itself mainly in isolated elements within existing buildings or in churches that show influences of Visigothic and Mozarabic architecture, particularly in the area bordering Spain. AMERICA: Mudéjar art, which emerged in the Iberian Peninsula after the Reconquista, did spread to the Americas as a result of Spanish colonization. Examples of Mudéjar architecture are found in countries such as Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela. AFRICA: Islamic architecture in North Africa developed following the Muslim conquests and is characterized by the construction of mosques, palaces, and other religious and civil buildings.
