description/mission statement:
A fire tower is a structure, located on a high spot in a forested area, from which people, called fire lookouts, watch for signs of a wildfire. When the fire lookout spots signs of smoke, they use mapping tools to pinpoint the location and then report it to their local dispatch team who will send out first responders. The fire tower is a small enclosed platform which usually sits on top of a steel tower although there are also fire towers which sit on large boulders or wooden towers. Quite often, fire towers are not accessible to the public but there are some fire towers which are now used as vacation or camping destinations. This category is to capture the location of fire towers around the world. Since fire towers are not the same as lookout towers, some proof that the tower is a fire tower should be included in the descriptions for the Waymark. Because most fire towers will not be accessible, pictures of the tower and any signs on the base of the tower are required for this category. If the tower is accessible, it would be interesting to see pictures of the view from the top.
