This is the NSW Rural Fire Service building of the Rookhurst Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade that was opened on 22nd July 1995. It is a khaki coloured Colorbond shed with a low-pitched hip roof of Colorbond. There are two khaki roller doors to the front, with a side door, and a very small annex at the back. There is a full concrete forecourt and apron. There is an engraved brushed stainless steel plaque pop-riveted to the left of the front of the building, explaining when it was opened by Brian Pickford - the Regional Co-ordinator of the Department of Bush Fire Service. The Station was constructed by the members of the Brigade. Kam Baker was the Fire Control Officer, and Ken Shaw was the Brigade Captain.
It is on a dirt road that extends around past the building, to meet up again with Thunderbolts Way, to make it safer for entering the high speed traffic on this main secondary road.
I certainly hope that 'they' have been able to get over the problems of just over ten years ago, when, as reported on the Rural segment of the ABC, 'Viewpoint', that there was a severe aging problem amongst the volunteers, and there may have needed to be a merging with another Brigade so as to have a Captain elected at the AGM. Quoting, below:
"Rookhurst fire brigade celebrates its 10th birthday this year. In that time it's helped put out some mighty fires around here and in other regions including the Christmas fires of 2001. It's won more than its fair share of trophies in the fire-fighters Olympics. It's dealt with road accidents on Thunderbolts Way where it corkscrews up the mountain to the New England plateau. It's gone to the aid of flood victims in neighbouring areas.
"Now it looks like we might not see our 11th birthday."
