The Franklin County Jail is at the NW corner of King and 2nd Streets in the Borough of Chambersburg.
This Franklin County Jail was originally built by the county in 1818. The structure, two-stories high with a hipped roof, having in its center a cupola. The walls, which are over three feet thick have outside measurment of 82 feet by 48 feet.
This is one of the oldest Penal Instutions to be used continually in the country. It has had but few modernizations, and makes a remarkable well suited museum of our penal history. The facility is presently owned by the Franklin County Historical Society.
