The town hall was built 1893 - 1896 after a long 10 year debate on what type of building the town wanted.
Up until this time the town clock which was erected in 1867 had been freestanding and located in the High Street. After the completion of the town hall the council decided to incorporate the clock into the facade of the new building.
The clock is impressive and is one of the more notable objects on the High street. The clock face is white and of a standard circular shape with black numbers shown in Roman numerals and small squares around the circumference of the clock to donate minutes/seconds.
