The Old Rock School was Valdese's first high school. Built by Waldensian craftsmen in the early 1920's, the school served to educate Valdese children for fifty-seven years. In 1986, a one million dollar renovation of the facility was completed: the classrooms now serve as office space for local businesses and organizations and for two art galleries. The auditorium hosts musical and theatrical performances, many of which are put on by Valdese's own Old Colony Players acting group. A banquet facility (The Waldensian Room) is also available for meetings, such as the weekly meeting of the Valdese Rotary Club, and is routinely used by Gardner Webb University for night classes as well as local industries for training seminars and corporate luncheons.
