Beetzsee is a narrow but long lake in the German state of Brandenburg, bordering the city of the same name. It consists of a tunnel valley carved by the glaciers of the Weichselian Glaciation and filled by the waters of river Havel 11,700 years ago.
The lake consists of three individual lakes connected by small, natural glacial canals, stretching 14 miles and reaching a maximal depth of 30 feet.
The lake is internationally renowned for the boat race track on its western shore (location of the waymark). Over a period of 50 years, the track has hosted countless boating events, among them three rowing world championships, two European kayaking championships and four motor boat world cup races.
The lake is very popular among locals for swimming, boating and fishing. The author of this waymark grew up in Brandenburg and actually learned how to swim, how to fish and how to sail at this jetty (picture above).
