St. John's Wesleyan Holiness Church was formerly known as the Pilgrim Holiness Church which is a Christian denomination associated with the holiness movement that split from the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1897. In 1968 the Pilgrim Holiness Church merged with the Wesleyan Church.
In the early 1900s American missionaries the Rev. and Mrs. O. L. King were sent by the Foreign Missions Department of the Pilgrim Holiness Church in the USA to Antigua to carry our missionary work in the Caribbean. In St. John's Antigua, the Rev. King acquired the land for the Pilgrim Holiness Church at the corner of Bishopsgate and Popeshead Streets. The deed for the land is dated February 10, 1915. The church was build by the Rev. and Mrs. O. L. King in the 1930s and was incorporated as the Pilgrim Holiness Church on April 3, 1936.
In January 21, 1961 the nearby Antigua Pilgrim High School began operation. After the Pilgrim Holiness Church merged with the Wesleyan Church the name on the church building became St. John's Wesleyan Holiness Church. Until the merger in 1968, the motto of the Pilgrim Holiness Church was: In Essential—Unity, In Non-Essentials—Liberty, In all things—Charity.
Antigua was the launching pad for mission work in several of the Caribbean islands, and became the headquarters for Northern Islands District of the Pilgrim Holiness Church which includes Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba, St. Thomas, and St. Croix.
