Grand Disco by Arnaldo Pomodoro is a large bronze sculpture depicting a disc with a shiny smooth exterior but a dark and complex interior. The interior can be seen spilling out of the center and cracks in the disc. This interior can also be seen through the open edges of the sculpture.
According to news reports, this sculpture was taken off display for several years for cleaning and restoration. It is now back on campus and on public display in an outdoor area.
This Grande Disco in Chicago is one of six versions of this sculpture on display throughout the world. The others are in Italy (2), Germany, North Carolina, and New York. (

From one news account about the piece:
"Pomodoro’s work is instantly recognizable both for its scale and the way he ruptures a simple form to revel a deepening and ever-darker pattern of fragmented geometric patterns at the core. His work can be seen everywhere from the United Nations building in New York City to the Vatican Museums in Vatican City, to Brisbane City Hall in Australia.
“The concept for all of them is reflection with darkness at the core,” said Jane Foley of Evanston-based Liparini Art Restoration."
