The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was established on May 18, 1933 by congressional charter. Exactly 50 years later this postage stamp was issued to commemorate the TVA’s 50th anniversary. The TVA was originally conceived to provide economic development to an area of the country that was particularly hard-hit by the Great Depression. Today, it’s primarily concerned with electric power generation with coal-fired, nuclear and hydroelectric plants in operation.
One of the first projects of the TVA was to build a dam on the Clinch River in northeastern Tennessee to provide flood control and hydroelectric power to the region. This dam was eventually named in honor of Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska who was instrumental in the creation of the TVA. Because of its status as an early TVA project and also because it’s considered architecturally significant, Norris Dam was chosen for the design of this 1983 stamp. Earlier, in 1961, the U.S. issued a commemorative postage stamp honoring the aforementioned Senator Norris. This stamp also included an image of Norris Dam. (Wow! - two stamps featuring Norris Dam – that puts it right up there with Wolf Trap Farm.)
The design of this stamp appears to have been based on an early photograph of Norris Dam before all the electrical transmission superstructure was completed. The dam is over 1800 feet long and stands 265 feet high. The power station is currently capable of generating 126 megawatts of electricity.
