What an enchantment to be at the top of the dune (despite gray and windy weather). The view is sublime and you feel so small on this vastness of fine sand.
« Belonging to the coastal dunes of Aquitaine, it is to this day, the only dune still in motion of this system. Between ocean and forest, it moves from 1 to 5 m per year to the east under the influence of prevailing winds and tides.
Thus, it gradually covers the adjoining forest. Composed of about 60 million cubic meters of sand, the Pilat dune is 100 to 115 meters high depending on the year.
The dune has an asymmetrical shape. On the ocean side, the face exposed to the wind is gently sloping. The grains of sand, transported by the wind, go up this slope by moving close to the ground. Arrived at the top of the dune, they fall thus constituting the steep slope, forest side. It is said to be unstable equilibrium.”
