This cemetery, Grafton's oldest burial ground, contains some of the town's most notable stones and markers, many by documented Massachusetts carvers.

One of the earliest orders of business for the forty proprietors of Grafton after the meeting house and school were established, was the laying out of a town burial ground. In November of 1934 Nathaniel Sherman, Joseph Willard, and Thomas Pratt were chosen as a committee to "stake out a burying-place or field." In 1735 the committee was instructed to stake out three acres for the lot, and in 1737 they
(with Joseph Willard replaced by James Cutter) reported the results of a survey which laid out one acre, 130 rods of land.

Except for the Indian section, the cemetery was closed to new graves at the end of the nineteenth century.
