John Hanley was born in 1746 and is a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. He lived in Monroe County, West Virginia and following the War he returned to the area and lived as a farmer. John Hanley died on January 13, 1811 and is buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Union, West Virginia. His grave is marked by the original stone, which is quite worn. On July 7, 1996 a small marker was place at the gravesite by the Warton and Peters Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
