Bernard Revel was born in what is now Lithuania in 1885. Having been arrested and imprisoned during some political unrest in 1905, he immigrated to the United States the following year as part of the mass emigration from eastern Europe at that time. An academic from a family of academics (his father was the rabbi of the local Jewish community) he continued his scholarly activities once in New York. He enrolled in the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in Lower Manhattan, received an MA degree from New York University and a PhD from Dropsie College in Philadelphia.

After marriage and a brief stint in the business world, Revel returned to Academia when he was appointed president of the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in 1915. During his 25 years as president (he served until his death in 1940) Revel oversaw the institute’s transition from a small school on the lower east side to the prestigious Yeshiva College in Washington Heights. Yeshiva stresses a traditional Orthodox Jewish education combined with the liberal arts.

In 1986, Bernard Revel was featured on a U.S. postage stamp. The stamp caused a small controversy when it was discovered that the stamp’s engraver placed a small star of David in Revel’s beard. It’s so small you need a magnifying glass to see it, nevertheless, the stamp was replaced the next year.
