From the marker:
A physician, John H. Montgomery settled here in 1835 from Lodi, New York, with Dr. Oliver C. Comstock, Jr. On March 16, 1838, they opened their "Splendid Store" at the town's first storefront building located just south of the present G.A.R. Hall. The enterprise specialized in the sale of "Comstock's Ague Pills," which spelled the start of a thriving patent medicine business. Unlike his partner, Montgomery chose to practice medicine and did so well into his later years. He also served as the postmaster, school board member and as a trustee of the Young Girls Institute (1855-59) at the Mansion House, now the site of Oaklawn Hospital.
