The parish church was built in 1181-89 as a three-nave Romanesque basilica. Three naves of equal length close in three semicircular apses (altar niches) in the east. It was consecrated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of boatmen and raftsmen, and placed under the Canonry of St. Zeno.
After the town fire of 1515, which severely affected the church, the side aisles were raised and additional galleries were created. The exterior was changed significantly as a result. The two galleries in the sanctuary were created in 1181 and show the original design of the church
