The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963 has generated more conspiracy theories than you can shake a lone gunman at. These theories often lack in the credibility department but then again, so does the official account. One of the more bizarre aspects of the case was the murder (on live national TV) of prime suspect Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby.

According to most accounts, Jack Ruby (born Jacob Rubenstein in Chicago) had a troubled childhood marred by truancy and other delinquent activity who eventually spent time in the juvey. After a brief stint in the Air Force during World War II, he moved to Dallas where he operated a couple of night clubs. Though he had a long ‘rap sheet,’ these were mostly penny ante charges related to his strip clubs. And though he had long association with horse racing and labor unions, there is no evidence of his involvement in organized crime. But according to other accounts, Jack Ruby was everything from an international gun runner to an undercover CIA operative with extensive ties to the underworld.

In either case, what everyone does know (because it happened on live TV) is that on November 24, 1963, Jack Ruby emerged from a crowd of reporters and fatally shot Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was the prime suspect in the Kennedy assassination and was being transferred to another holding area at the time. Ruby’s stated reason for committing the murder was to prevent Jacqueline Kennedy from having to travel to Dallas to testify at a trial. The general opinion though is that if you believe that, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn you may be interested in buying. In any event, Jack Ruby was convicted of first-degree murder. And although his conviction was overturned on appeal, Ruby died in the joint while awaiting a new trial date.
