[FR] Au XIIIe siècle, le château dépendait de la vicomté de Limoges et relevait du roi de France. Il défendait la région de Thiviers à Brantôme et Nontron. Sans doute une ancienne forteresse existait-elle avant le XVe siècle, comme en témoignent quelques vestiges de tour. Le château actuel date de la fin du XVe siècle. Un corps de logis flanqué de deux tours carrées et d'une tour ronde couronnées de mâchicoulis, constitue une première construction à laquelle se greffa, aux 17e et XVIIIe siècles, une seconde demeure qui remplace une partie du château primitif détruit par les Anglais. Le château du XVe siècle présente tous les caractères des gentilhommières construites à cette époque dans le Périgord. Il fut conçu pour allier le souci d'une habitation commode à la nécessité de défense. La demeure pouvait se défendre contre les bandes armées et les pillages des routiers. A cette époque, l'édifice était constitué d'un corps de logis rectangulaire flanqué, aux angles d'un des grands côtés, de deux tours carrées. Une tour circulaire contenant l'escalier défendait le centre de la face opposée. Dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, après les guerres de Religion, une grande demeure fut annexée. Le constructeur raccorda ces nouveaux logis aux bâtiments anciens par l'intermédiaire d'un escalier à volées droites soutenues par des arcs. Au rez-de-chaussée, une galerie à arcades en anse de panier s'ouvre sur la cour. Au XVIIIe siècle furent ajoutés un grand pavillon d'angle sur les jardins, et un motif de porche d'entrée avec fronton et attributs sur la façade postérieure.

At that time, the building consisted of a rectangular main building flanked by two square towers at the corners of one of the long sides. A circular tower containing the staircase defended the center of the opposite side. In the first half of the 17th century, after the Wars of Religion, a large residence was added. The builder connected these new dwellings to the old buildings by means of a staircase with straight flights supported by arches. On the first floor, a gallery with basket-handle arches opens onto the courtyard.
