Fort Pickens is a beautiful park on the very tip of Santa Rosa Island and offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico as well as Pensacola Bay. The fort is built at the mouth of the Pensacola pass and was one of three forts built to protect the city of Pensacola.
The famous Indian Geronimo was held here from 1886 to May 1887.
The Fort was damaged in Hurricane Ivan and the road to the fort was completely washed away. The fort is still open to the public but the only way to access it now is by boat or a VERY long walk. This fort is a wonderful place to explore, there are bayfront, longleaf pine beaches, sugar white Gulf beaches, dense tree thickets and all kinds of critters. It's hard to reach right now but if you can get to it you will not regret it!
When the road will be rebuilt no one knows yet as there seems to be a lot of discussion about what type of road to build to withstand another hurricane.
