The Walnut Street Bridge is a truss bridge that spanned the Susquehanna River. It was built to bypass toll bridges in 1890, then converted to a pedestrian bridge in 1972. In 1996 the bridge lost 2 of its seven spans from flood waters and large pieces of ice. Today it still functions as a pedestrian bridge connecting those from downtown to the City Island for activities and recreation.
