With such memorable titles as ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and ‘The Sun Also Rises,’ Ernest Hemingway is one of the most notable American authors of the twentieth century. His short story ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and a Nobel Prize in 1954. Several of Hemingway’s works have formed the basis for motion pictures such a ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro’ and ‘Islands in the Stream.’

Ernest Hemingway is known as much for his adventuresome lifestyle and globetrotting as for his writing. As a volunteer and war correspondent, he was up close and personal with four twentieth-century conflicts: World War I & II, the Greek Revolution and the Spanish Civil War. His war experiences became the basis for several of his novels. He was also a member of the American expatriates living in Paris during the 1920s known as the ‘Lost Generation.’ Many of these Parisian acquaintances show up as characters in his stories as well.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Ernest Hemingway spent considerable time hunting elk and grizzly bear in the American West, big game hunting in Africa and fishing from his boat on the high seas. He became a big fan of bull fighting which also found its way into his stories. Besides Europe, he also spent some time in China and lived in Cuba for a while. Eventually he settled into two homes: Key West, Florida during the winter months and the Sun Valley area of Idaho in the summers. Both of these homes are National Historic Landmarks.

Hemingway’s lifestyle (and drinking habits) took a physical toll on his body. He was severely injured while volunteering during World War I, was involved in multiple automobile accidents, became infected with anthrax in France and contracted amoebic dysentery in Africa and was almost killed twice in plane crashes. All these physical ailments caused him to have chronic pain issues and other minor disabilities.

Ernest Hemingway was found dead in his Ketchum, Idaho home in 1961 from a gunshot wound. Although initially reported as accidental, it was later confirmed to have been self-inflicted. His body was buried in the local Ketchum Cemetery.
