University of Idaho adopted the Vandal as its mascot in 1918 when the editor of the school paper, The Argonaut, began referring to the football team as Vandals. Previously, Idaho's teams were frequently called "Huns," but that mascot fell out of favor with the beginning of World War I.

Unlike the Vandal statue, Joe Vandal is usually pictured as a good natured, cartoonish rogue in a rather Germannic helmet. This Vandal is much more intimidating.
