Wooden Rooster Weathervane - Shelburne, VT - Philatelic Photographs on Waymarking.com

The eclectic Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, is actually a collection of collections. There’s fine art, toys and dolls, farm implements, and one of the finest collections of American folk art around, including an incredible collection of duck decoys. Electra Havemeyer Webb, the museum’s founder, was one of the first people to start collecting folk art and she scoured New England for paintings, cigar shop figures, other carvings, textiles and, of course, weathervanes. She picked up this wooden rooster weathervane from an antique dealer in New York in 1958.

The weathervane is made of pine and is attributed to James Lombard, a Maine farmer who lived from 1865 to 1920. Besides farming, Lombard was known to make chicken weathervanes on the side. Several have been found in the area around Bridgton, Maine, where his farm was located. Now they may be found in several museums with folk art collections.

The stamp was one of five designs showing different weathervanes from this museum’s collection. They were only available in large rolls of 3000 or 10,000 stamps for use by mass mailers in their automated affixing machines.
