A small olive tree dedicated to HM Queen Elizabeth II in the Lower Barrakka Garden.
This Olive tree was planted by HRH the Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO When Queen Elisabeth had been regent for 60 years. In the park there are several other different memorials.
Malta has been a British colony for 174 years. The island became independent on 21 September 1964. Only 10 years later, namely in 1974, Malta gained its total independence from Great Britain and became a republic.
At the foot of the tree there is a stone with the following text:
"Tree planted by HRH the Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO on 14 April 2012 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II."
