Georgia O’Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and absolutely fell in love with the landscapes. She would return to New Mexico to live permanently in 1949. She is quoted as saying “When I got to New Mexico: that was mine. As soon as I saw it: that was my country. I’d never seen anything like it before, but it fitted to me exactly.”

During this first visit, she stayed with her friend, poet Marie Tudor Garland, on a ranch in Alcalde, New Mexico. She made several paintings of the surrounding landscapes including this one, which was basically the view out her back door, as the full title of the painting suggests: ‘Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico/Out Back of Marie’s II.’ Though stylized, you can make out the different layers of landscape and the distinct peaks of the Jemez Mountains in the distance. The view is across the Rio Grande valley to the west/southwest.

The painting is part of the collection of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
