Aaron Spelling was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. After serving as a pilot in World War II and graduating from SMU in 1949, he made his way to Hollywood where he began his long and illustrious career in show business. Spelling initially found work as an actor, appearing in bit roles in many early television classics such as Gunsmoke, I Love Lucy and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. By the late 1950s, he had moved on to writing screenplays and production.

Beginning in the mid-1960s, Aaron Spelling produced a string of highly successful television shows. These included The Mod Squad, The Rookies, Family, Charlie's Angels, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Hart to Hart, Dynasty, Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, 7th Heaven, Charmed, Jane's House and Sunset Beach. The show Beverly Hills, 90210 also starred his daughter, Tori Spelling.

Spelling is credited as the producer or executive producer on 218 different movies and television shows - more than anyone else to date. He was also one of the richest celebrities in Hollywood. He died of cancer in 2006 and was laid to rest at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City.
