The oval plaque at Rawson Pass has a little of the history of the region. The Main Range walk is a loop of 22km, Grade 4, some on gravel narrow track, and some compressed dirt. Recommended December to March - other times only for experienced back country hikers or cross-country skiers. It is possible to join it from Rawson Pass after walking up from the Thredbo chairlift - these coordinates. Otherwise use the Parking Coordinates.
The Start and End is normally from Charlotte Pass (so don't forget the $8 car entry fee). While signage at the pass may say 20km, it is a bit more. So leave 7 - 9 hours to comfortably do it. Be prepared with some spare layers in your day pack, along with 2 litres of water. Not uncommon to go from 30° to 5° within an hour if a storm front comes through.
While stockman had been bringing their cattle up for summer pasture from the 1830s, it was in 1840 when Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki came to explore and survey it that it was named after the shape of General Kosciuszko's tomb.
