The highest mountain of mainland Australia is Mount Kosciuszko, at 2228 metres. From pre-European history the Aboriginal people of the Monaro plains, and groups from the southern tablelands, south coast and also northern Victoria have visited this nondescript mound collecting bogong moths in summer to augment their diet. Later stockmen began visiting the area from the 1830s looking for summer pasture.

In winter time it is mostly reached by country skiers, but in summer time there can be hundreds of people enjoying the isolated view. Access can be by chairlift from Thredbo with a 5km walk to Rawson Pass on an elevated grid walkway. From Charlottes Pass it is a 7.5km walk to Rawson Pass, but you can use your mountain bike to get to there. From Rawson Pass it is a further 1.5km 'corkscrew' walk on the path to the summit - NO bike allowed!! While the walk is free, don't forget the $8 car fee in summertime. A couple of different Types of Geocaches can be found on the way and at the top!
