INSCRIPCIÓN: La ciudad de Mataró a Miquel Biada
DESCRIPCIÓN : El monumento representa la figura del dios Hermes o Mercurio, mensajero de los dioses antiguos, con los pies alados con una golondrina en una mano y el clásico caduce con las dos serpientes encaradas una con la otra. El dios corre sobre una rueda de tren que se desliza sobre un raíl. En el pedestal, un medallón con el retrato de Miquel Biada.
COMENTARIO : Homenaje en el primer centenario del primer ferrocarril de Cataluña y de España, el Barcelona-Mataró de 1848, promovido por el mataronense Miquel Biada i Buñol (1789-1848), rico indiano, que, al volver de Cuba promovió con el suyo capital y el de sus socios el ferrocarril. La plaza fue remodelada y el monumento restaurado en el ciento cincuenta aniversario de la primera vía férrea, con una ofrenda floral en memoria de su fundador. Había sido inaugurado el 28 de octubre de 1948, declarado festivo en Mataró y con asistencia multitudinaria."
