The building was constructed in the late 19th century as the home of Sir Windsor, an Englishman dedicated to trading and resident in Alexandria.
In 1906 it was transformed in a hotel.
In 1952, with the new nationalist regime of Nasser, the hotel changed ownership. It was by then the perfect concept of glamour and elegance. The place to go for anyone important in the Egyptian society, like the dancer Badia Massabni and Taheya Karioka. By then there was a casino and a club, later transformed in a ballroom.

There, it was common to see theatrical performances and classical music concerts being played.
Built in an English style, the spectacularly molded ceilings and floors are decorated with quality Turkish and Persian carpets.
There are several highlights in today's hotel: the old lift, the sumptuous lobby and the restaurant, which is located on the top floor and rooftop terrace, offering one of the best views in town.
