"According to Bernáldez's chronicle of the Reconquista, the taking of the town of Setenil was fundamental for the Castilian crown in its advance towards Granada, although the siege of 1407 did not provide the desired fruit. From that moment, Setenil was considered almost impregnable, constituting a fundamental door for the reconquest of the Nasrid kingdom. From the times of John II of Castile until the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, there were seven sieges (hence the name of the city, Septem nihil), the last being (the of September 21, 1484), which led to the definitive victory.

Under Christian rule, Setenil was declared a royal town, and received the Charter of Privileges from the monarchs in 1501, which provided for a large number of franchises and benefits comparable to those enjoyed by Seville at that time."
