Among the Shelburne Museum’s eclectic collection of about 150,000 pieces of folk, decorative and fine art, there are about 500 quilts, 1400 duck decoys, 1000 dolls and 140 weathervanes. In 2012, the U.S. Postal Service used five of these weathervanes for the design of a new set of first-class postage stamps issued in large coils for mass mailers. This one shows a centaur, the half-horse, half-man creature from Greek mythology, specifically, Sagittarius, the archer. It is believed that it was made by the A.L. Jewell and Co. of Waltham, MA. Jewell was one of the first manufacturers of weathervanes in the U.S. and horses were one of their most popular models, especially ones sporting long flowing tails. It dates from the period just before the Civil War and was found in New Haven CT in the 1940s.
