"Edifiée en 1451, sur les ruines d’un petit oratoire du XIIIe
siècle, la chapelle est construite à la tête du pont sur la
Vienne, lieu de passage important pour les hommes et les
marchandises. De style gothique flamboyant, agrandie grâce
aux libéralités de Louis XI, la chapelle a été restaurée à la fin
du XIXe siècle. Elle est ouverte en été, lors de manifestations
ponctuelles et pendant les Journées du Patrimoine.
Louis XI visite deux fois la chapelle, une première fois le 2
juillet 1463 en revenant de Bayonne, la seconde fois en venant
de Poitiers au mois de mars 1464. En 1470, il fait don de 1200
livres pour contribuer à l’agrandissement de la chapelle afin
d’accueillir les nombreux pèlerins. Une nef à trois travées vient
alors s’ajouter à l’abside.
En remerciement au roi, les chanoines font sculpter les
statues de Louis XI et son épouse à genoux.
Le 16 aout 1624, Louis XIII accorde la chapelle aux Récollets
de Saint-Junien. Les moines franciscains y restent moins d’un an,
le Chapitre ayant contesté avec succès la décision royale.
A la Révolution, les statues représentant les époux royaux
sont détruites, les armoiries des seigneurs de la région sont
martelées. On pense même détruire la chapelle mais elle sert de
fabrique de salpêtre en 1762, avant d’être affermée au citoyen
Radenne qui y adosse un appentis. En 1796, désaffectée, la
chapelle sert d’école primaire aux élèves du canton de Saint-
Martin. Les habitants du faubourg de la Voie du Pont adressent
aux Consuls une pétition afin de rouvrir la chapelle au culte.
Au milieu du XIXe siècle, la chapelle autrefois célèbre est
abandonnée et tombe en ruines. L’installation de l’association
du Rosaire à Notre-Dame-du-Pont, désireuse d’y attirer de
nouveaux fidèles, va faire revivre l’antique dévotion et participer
activement à la restauration de la chapelle. Des travaux de
restauration commencent en 1870. Les deux pignons sont
reconstruits, une rosace remplace l’étroite fenêtre de la façade,
on aménage une balustrade pour ceinturer le bâtiment.
La façade de la Chapelle a fait l’objet d’une restauration en
2012 et 2013."

"Built in 1451, on the ruins of a small 13th century oratory

of the 19th century. It is open in summer, during events
occasionally and during Heritage Days.
Louis XI visited the chapel twice, the first time on 2
July 1463 returning from Bayonne, the second time coming
of Poitiers in March 1464. In 1470, he donated 1200
books to contribute to the expansion of the chapel in order to
to welcome the many pilgrims. A three-bay nave comes
then add to the apse.
In gratitude to the king, the canons had the
statues of Louis XI and his kneeling wife.
On August 16, 1624, Louis XIII granted the chapel to the Récollets
of Saint-Junien. The Franciscan monks stayed there for less than a year,
the Chapter having successfully challenged the royal decision.
During the Revolution, statues representing the royal spouses
are destroyed, the coats of arms of the lords of the region are
hammered. There are even plans to destroy the chapel but it serves as
saltpeter factory in 1762, before being leased to the citizen
Radenne which has a lean-to attached to it. In 1796, decommissioned, the
chapel serves as a primary school for students from the canton of Saint-
Martin. The inhabitants of the Faubourg de la Voie du Pont address
to the Consuls a petition in order to reopen the chapel for worship.
In the mid-19th century, the once famous chapel was
abandoned and falling into ruin. The installation of the association
of the Rosary at Notre-Dame-du-Pont, wishing to attract
new faithful, will revive the ancient devotion and participate
actively involved in the restoration of the chapel. Works of
restoration began in 1870. The two gables are
rebuilt, a rose window replaces the narrow window on the facade,
a balustrade is installed to surround the building.
The facade of the Chapel was the subject of a restoration in
2012 and 2013."
