Tolson’s Chapel was built in 1866 by former slaves shortly after the Emancipation. It first held a school in 1868. It was formed as the Sharpsburg Colored Methodist-Episcopal Church and was first pastored by John L. Tolson, for whom it was eventually renamed. It closed as a church in 1998.

This building serves as a symbol of the meaning of freedom to the millions freed after the Civil War, as well as the value of the sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands who gave their lives to secure and preserve that freedom.
