Cairn of Claise, the Hill of the Hollows, is a 1063 metre, 3488 feet high summit in the Grampian Mountains of Scotland. The top is basically a high point on the moorland of the Mounth Plateau, but with sufficient drops all around to make it a Scottish Munro, mountain over 3,000 feet.

The stony summit is a cairn lying a few feet east of an old stone wall that marks the border of Angus and Aberdeenshire, the cairn lies on the Angus side of the wall and this marks the mountain as the second highest in the county after the neighbouring Glas Maol to the south-west which is four metres higher.

The mountain lies on the western edge of the plateau with vast extensive moorland to the east and a steep drop to the west towards the ski slopes of Glenshee. Its central position means that it is usually climbed in conjunction with other Munro summits.

STEEPNESS: Moderate slopes from all directions except the west side. Most of the steepness comes from the ascent of other mountains in the area.

TERRAIN: Moorland grass with many paths scoured out of the terrain.

ACCESSIBLITY: Difficult to reach when climbed on its own, it is usually reached via the neighbouring mountains of Carn an Tuirc, and Glas Maol, both two miles north-west and south-west respectively. These are reached from the A93 road to the west by separate two mile climbs that benefit from high starting points on one of the highest roads in the UK. Longer routes come from the east via the mountain of Tolmount.

NAVIGATION: The summit easily seen from the neighbouring mountains as a pimple on the high point of the moorland, and is reached from there by well worn paths. The wall offers a good guide on mist as well.

DANGER: It situation in remote moorland means that good navigation is required in mist, with paths being followed.

Altitude in Feet: 3488
