The Alex Fraser Bridge, named for a former Minister of Transportation in British Columbia, spans the Fraser River, which was named for Simon Fraser, an early fur trader in BC who led an expedition down the river in 1806 (and no relation to Alex). With a main span of 465 meters, this bridge was longest cable-stayed bridge in the world when it opened in 1986. But that didn’t last long and today, it doesn’t even make the list.

In 1995, Canada Post issued a set of four postage stamps featuring different types of bridges from different areas of the country. They weren’t the first Canadian postage stamps to feature bridges, nor would they be the last. The Alex Fraser Bridge was the most modern of the bridges on the set being less than ten years old when the stamps were issued.
