The Venice City Council in 2006 approved creation of the arboretum in the West Blalock Park, following the recommendations of citizen volunteers. Situated on 4.5 acres and located near the William H. Jervey, Jr., Venice Public Library, the Venice Community Center and the Venice Museum and Archives, it is at a prime location for easy visiting. It was named for one of its prime advocates, Monty Andrews.
The arboretum has been awarded a Level II Accreditation by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and the Morton Arboretum, located in Lisle, Illinois.
The arboretum features more than 100 different native and non-native trees and palms along with nearly 125 shrubs.
Other features in the arboretum include life size sculptures, certified butterfly garden, succulent garden, orchid display, bromeliad section, Florida Friendly Garden, working compost area and a rain barrel display.
Community and educational events are held during the year from Arbor Day in January to the Tree Lightning in December.
