The mill pond that existed in front of you was approximately 14 feet deep and held a huge volume of water that was channeled to your left to power the sawmill. The earthen dam on which you are standing was constructed by hand using wagons, oxen, and mules, It was likely slave laborers that excavated the enormous amount of earth needed to build the dam. Borrow pits at both ends of the dam are testament to this grueling work that took place in the harsh Florida heat and bug-filled swamps.
