When the population of Cary begin a period of rapid growth in the mid-1960’s, there was a need for a new water tank. In January, 1968, the Town purchased a 1.5 acre site on a tall hill at 920 N. Harrison Avenue, for the purpose of constructing a water storage vessel.

The base elevation of the tank is 480 feet above sea level. The overall height of the tank is approximately 200 feet. This tank is paired with a newer tank at the intersection of Kildaire Farm Road and Cary Parkway. This creates what is known as the Central Pressure Zone. Both tanks have the same overflow height of 641 feet.

Both tanks also are host to cellular telephone antennas. Cary requires that the antennas blend in with the tank structure and color. Therefore you will see “bays” of antennas around the railing of the tank, and not projecting above.
