Shelton was officially incorporated on January 22, 1889. The economy was largely built around the logging industry. The Simpson Timber mill on Puget Sound's Oakland Bay dominates the landscape of the downtown area.
This is the welcome sign as you enter town from the south on State Route 3. The main sign is engraved in a huge slab of a 600+ year old tree. It shows a timeline in the life of the tree from when it sprouted in 1289 until it was cut in the early 20th century.
