On Tuesday, June 26, we stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Pendleton with sweeping views of the Umatilla Valley. Because of the dust and smog, you could no longer clearly see the mountains of the Cascade Range.

I traveled The Oregon Trail with an Elderhostel group from Kansas City/Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon June 13-28, 2007. On Tuesday, June 26, we stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Pendleton with sweeping views of the Umatilla Valley.

The name, "Deadman’s Pass," was the result of an accident during the Bannock War when a teamster driving a wagon through the pass was killed by renegade Indians from the nearby Indian agency. Several other violent deaths in the pass reinforced the name over the years.

We visited Tamastslikt Cultural Institute. We saw several birds that were exhibited primarily for the passengers of “Queen of the West.” There was an exhibit memorializing the death 50 years ago of Celilo Falls, a popular fishing and grazing place on the Columbia River inundated by The Dalles Dam.
