This sign is in French, and my French is rusty, but I think this is what it says:

The premiere church of the Parish of Lafayette was the church St Jean of the Vermilion. This site was donated by Jean Mouton in 1821. In 1824, it was a gift of land for a court and was founded Vermilionville.

St. John the Evangelist Cathedral was built in the Dutch Romanesque style and completed in 1916. It is the third church built on the site donated by Jean Mouton in l821, when Lafayette was the town of Vermilionville. Located behind the cathedral is a graveyard dating back to 1820. All the graves are above-ground graves. On the grounds is an oak tree that has been estimated to be around 500 years old. It measures 8.5 feet in diameter, with a circumference of 26.7 feet; it stands approximately 125 high with a spread of 210 feet.
