City Hall/Thalian Hall was constructed between 1855 and 1858. The building was built to serve as both the center of city government and as a cultural center with a 1,000 seat opera house. The building also originally housed the Wilmington Public Library. The building was designed by James F. Post, a local Wilmington architect. The building is in a Classical Revival style with Corinthian columns surrounding its entrance. The building has been renovated a few times over the years including a major renovation done by the Public Works Administration which was completed in 1940. The building continues to serve as the Wilmington City Hall and Thalian Hall continues to operate as a live theater.
