The Salem Public Library was founded in 1904 by volunteers from the Salem Women's Club, and used a room in the old city hall. In 1912 it became a department of the city, and in the same year it moved into it's own building, funded by Andrew Carnegie. In 1972, the new municipal plaza opened, with city hall on one side and the library on the other.
