This Wilderness Permit Center is located in the Longmire historic administration district, located on the road up to the Paradise section of the park. The building was first used as the administration headquarters for the park in 1909. It replaced the 1st administration building which is now used as the park museum.
At the permit center you will find a model of Mt. Rainier with trails painted on it. One or two rangers are always on hand to give information on trail and climbing conditions as well as to offer backcountry permits for those wishing to backpack in the park. The center is only open from late May to early October. In the off season permits are available up the road at the ranger desk witihin the Paradise Visitor Center.
Adjacent to the building is a major access point to the Wonderland Trail, a 93 mile trail that circumnavigates the mountain. To backpack this trail it is necessary to first apply for a free permit at the Wilderness Permit Center.
