The Svir river drops about 95 feet between the two large lakes which are part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway. Two dams, with associated locks and power plants, are needed for ships traveling the water route between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The upstream lock, near the town of Podporozhe, has a chamber 920 feet by 70 feet (281 X 21.5 meters) and it raises/lowers ships 32 feet (10 meters).
Construction of the dam, power plant and locks began at this site in 1932 but was not completed until 1951. The lock chambers are bordered by attractive gardens one of which has a white stone monument with a portrait of Lenin. The lock towers are decorated with various types of ships that have sailed these waters.
