From Illinois: A Descriptive and Historical Guide - Aurora section:
The AURORA HISTORICAL SOCIETY BUILDING, Oak Ave, at Cedar St., was a gift
to the city from the daughters of W.A. Tanner, early settler. Built in
1857, the 17-room house contains a grandfather's clock, Aurora's first piano,
and other pieces of early furniture brought by boat from Buffalo to Chicago and
then hauled overland to Aurora. Home utensils, ornaments, intimate
letters, and other exhibits are arranged throughout the rooms to portray, in a
warmly personal terms, living conditions of early days. There is an
excellent collection of pioneer portraits, an original Lincoln letter, and a
group of legal documents and memoirs of local historical significance.
The house continues to be as described in the Guide. The house is
operated as a museum by the Aurora Historical Society as it has since it was
donated to them in 1936. The house is open May - December, Mondays and
Saturdays 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Admission is: Adults, $3.00, Students
& Seniors, $1.50.
The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
