Big Hatchet Peak rises from the area in a drastic way. This is one reason why it's ranked highest in the state for spire measure- it rises above the local terrain the most. Surprisingly, the hike up to the top is not as difficult as other peaks in the area.

The trail is fairly well marked and does a good job of winding around the mountain without being excessively steep. However, it does disappear approximately halfway up. Even making it this far provides an excellent view of the area. At this point, the climb then becomes a moderate scramble, with no technical skills or equipment needed.

Directions:
To access Big Hatchet Peak, travel south from Hatchita on Highway 81 for approximately 11 miles. As the road curves westward, there will be a public road to the east. Follow the signs. Eventually, it will seem as if you're getting farther away from the mountain- and there won't be many turn-offs. Take the first right you come to after a while. You'll know you're on the right road when you see a fallen down windmill. Follow this as long as your vehicle can make it. The trail will start just at the end of the road.
Altitude in Feet: 8363
